Los Angeles Dump and Landfill Guide

Dump It Yourself or Rent a Dumpster?

23 public landfills and transfer stations around Los Angeles with hours, gate fees and who can use them, plus a calculator that shows which way costs less for your load.

What does it cost to dump a pickup load in Los Angeles?

At the Los Angeles County sites that post their rates, expect to pay about $83 to $140 per trip. Most landfills and transfer stations here bill by the ton with a one ton minimum, so a 600 pound pickup load pays for the full ton.

That minimum is what makes the math change. One or two loads in your own truck is usually cheaper to haul yourself. A garage, a remodel or a yard full of debris means trip after trip at the minimum, and that is where a dumpster comes out ahead. The calculator below runs the numbers for your load.

No dump on our list matches that search. Try a nearby city, or call us at 818-350-8811 and we will point you to the right one.
      Before You Go

Six Things to Know Before You Drive to the Dump

      1

      Tarp the load

Loads have to be covered or tied down. Sunshine Canyon lists a $175 penalty for an untarped load and San Bernardino County landfills double your fee.

      2

Check that they take your address

Scholl Canyon, Calabasas, Savage Canyon and the Orange County and San Bernardino County landfills only take waste from their own area. Bring ID or a utility bill.

      3

Plan on the one ton minimum

Most LA County sites charge for a full ton even if you bring 400 pounds. Fewer, fuller trips cost less than many small ones.

      4

Bring a vest and a hard hat

CLARTS requires both. Sunshine Canyon sells them at the gate for $12.50 each and Puente Hills sells vests for $4.50. Wear closed shoes.

      5

      Know how you will pay

The WM sites in the Antelope Valley and Toland Road take cards only. The LA County Sanitation Districts sites take cash and cards but not checks.

      6

      Leave hazardous waste at home

Paint, oil, batteries, solvents and propane tanks get turned away at every dump. Take them to a household hazardous waste collection center.

      Los Angeles Dump Questions, Answered

How much does it cost to dump a pickup load of trash in Los Angeles?

At the Los Angeles County sites that post their rates, one pickup load runs about $83 to $140 at the gate. Most of them bill by the ton with a one ton minimum, so a light load pays for a full ton anyway. Sunshine Canyon Landfill in Sylmar, for example, lists $120 per ton with a one ton minimum plus a $19.71 environmental fee per load. Outside LA County the minimums are lower, from about $14 to $43, but the Orange County and San Bernardino County landfills only take waste from their own county.

Where is the closest public dump to the San Fernando Valley?

Sunshine Canyon Landfill at 14747 San Fernando Road in Sylmar is the public landfill for most of the Valley, including Van Nuys, North Hollywood, Northridge and Granada Hills. Scholl Canyon Landfill and Calabasas Landfill are close to parts of the Valley too, but each one only accepts waste from its own service area, so check the list before you drive.

Is Chiquita Canyon Landfill open to the public?

No. Chiquita Canyon Landfill in Castaic stopped accepting waste on January 1, 2025. The closest public landfill on this list for the Santa Clarita Valley is Sunshine Canyon Landfill in Sylmar.

Can anyone dump at Scholl Canyon Landfill?

No. Scholl Canyon only accepts waste generated in Glendale, La Cañada Flintridge, Pasadena, South Pasadena, San Marino, Sierra Madre, Altadena, La Crescenta, Montrose and a few nearby unincorporated areas. If your load comes from anywhere else, use a different site.

Is it cheaper to haul it myself or rent a dumpster?

It depends on how much you have and whether you own a truck. With your own truck and one to three loads, hauling it yourself usually costs less in cash. Around five pickup loads the two get close. Past that, or sooner if you have to rent a truck, the one ton minimum on every trip adds up and a dumpster usually costs less, before you even count your time. Use the calculator on this page with your own numbers.

Can I take concrete and dirt to the dump?

At some sites. The LA County Sanitation Districts sites charge inert material at the same rate as trash with a one ton minimum. Scholl Canyon lists clean dirt at $10 per ton when it is accepting it, so call first. The downtown CLARTS station does not take dirt, concrete or asphalt at all. Heavy material also overloads a pickup fast, which is why most people use a heavy material bin like our 3 yard heavy duty or 10 yard lowboy.

Do I have to cover my load?

Yes. Loads have to be covered or tied down, and the dumps charge for it if they are not. Sunshine Canyon lists a $175 penalty for an untarped load, the LA County Sanitation Districts sites add $5.40 per ton or per load, and San Bernardino County landfills double the disposal fee.

What will the dump not take?

Hazardous waste is turned away everywhere. That means paint, motor oil, batteries, solvents, pesticides, propane tanks and anything liquid. Many sites also refuse tires, appliances that still have refrigerant, and electronics. Those items go to a household hazardous waste collection center instead.
